Final Major Photographic Project
Finally, after three years
of a Salford University student of photography, my final project it is on it's
way. This project must be taken seriously and I have to give all my best so I
can show the world my possibilities and the experience I gained through this
module. An important point that I had to have in mind for this project was that
I had to make a new project based on the previous one. And so I did. The
subject of the previous project that had chosen was the differentiation between
the traditional and modern buildings through fashion photography. After several
visits in villages of Cyprus, I decided that "Lefkara" would be the
perfect place for a better understanding of the subject and make a research on
how people were dreasing in the past and the importance of the tradition of
fashion. Since I was young I was a 'lover' of Greek Mythology and due to the
movie I watched recently (Hercules) I was forced to make the project about The
labors of Hercules and show through the photoshoot in the studio and editing
with photoshop elements, a surrealistic and a wonderful result. I wanted to
show Hercules with effects that would show the power of the Gods and give the
sence of supernatural powers that Hercules had. Research was under way and I
started thinking about how the studio will be decorated and what the model will
wear. When I visited shops that are selling costumes I was dissapointed because
I only could buy the costume but not rent one and this was extremely out of my
budget. This was the reason of deciding to change over the subject of my final
project. This was an unexpected situation but I had to make quick decisions so
I could be prepared for the new subject.
A shiny day, I grabbed my camera and I
visited Castlefields Canal in Deansgate. The path next to the river gave me the
chance to walk next to the nature which was a magical and a peaceful experience.
Castlefields is a place that reminds me the beautiful Europe of Paris, Venice, Amsterdam etc. After a long walk a stadium appeared in my shots. Old Trafford
was on my way. After a long walk, I was thinking what was happening in the 80s
and 90s in these pathwalks. What else? Football hooliganism. In the 80s English government was facing troubles by hooligans of different firms all over the
country. Other says that England was the 'mother' of hooligans and other fans
in the globe were inspired by them to create strong firms to stand in clashes
against other firms. As a football lover I visited many stadiums in Europe and
this gave me the opportunity to memorize moments that a person have once in
his life. In my photography portfolio pictures of the stadiums I visited will
be shown.
Research
Nick Knight is a British fashion and documentary photographer and skinhead was his first book. Skinhead was published in 1982 when Nick was a student at Bournemouth. This book presents their families and their kids. It shows their daily life, tattoos of firms that members had to be inked, their dress code and generally how their daily life was running until the weekend.
The story of Skinheads started from the youth people of the working class in 1960 ib London and no longer than 2 years was spread all over the country. In the last years of 60s, Skinheads was a global phenomenon All members of Skinhead groups had shaved heads so they looked all the same. In the begining of their history they weren't getting into politics but later some right wing and left wing firms were rising and they are still rising since today. Racism was not about color.
English nationalists (black and white) started attacking to foreigners (asians, africans, Indians etc.). Sharp 69 was the biggest anarchist firm which was mostly left wing. Sharp 69 had different firms in different cities and and later in the whole world.
Most of them were inked by tattoos and it was a trend of skinhead firms to be inked on the front and the back of the head.
Skinhead firms had their own dress code. The punk style blue jean, army boots and shirts was the style of skinhead appearance. The hardcore style was completed when skinheads started wearing fly jackets. Their aim was to all look the same so when they were getting into troubles, they couldn't be recognized.
American History X:
The next short video is about a new-Nazi skinhead who went to jail and when he came out he tried to protect hes brother not to follow the same path that he did. The main actor is Edward Norton. Basically the meanings of this movie are against racism and fanaticism especially about nazis who spread the fear and death.
Hooligans
After the research about skinhead’s history, continuing is the
time to move to hooligans and see how the term ‘hooligan’ born six decades
ago. The reason I have choose this topic is because I love football and the
topic sounds really interesting. And the question always in my mind was if the
people who create violence in the fields really love football or not?
Throughout my research, I will mention important reasons for hooligan’s behaviors in and out of the field and how community and police react of their
behavior.
History of Hooligans:
In 1898 the term hooliganism according to police statements, were gangs consisted of young males who doing
fights and makings several damages. Hooliganism was actually born in the early
60s in England in football. After the early 80's situation come out of control
with lots of fights and even deaths in and outside of football fields. The most
brutal fights of hooligans were in derby days when two huge English rivals
facing each other. Nowadays, due to the drastic measures of English government,
hooliganism become extinct and hooligan incidents are really rare.
At 1989 the Hillsborough disaster at FA CUP semi-final between Liverpool f.c and Nottingham Hillsborough stadium at Sheffield with result of 96 deaths and 766 injuries because of the police letting too many people enter the stadium was one of the worst football disasters in history. Because of that nearly all the large-scale football violence occurred outside stadiums.

Social media and more generally society characterized hooligans as
three world people brainless and that they are not real fans harming football.
However, in reality hooligans are passionate people who love their team. They
breath and live with the same vine for each Sunday and each much with the same
passion. They put their team even above their own-selves and they all gather
together in a fan club were in there is where strong bonds and truly relationships are created. Brothers that will never betray you whatever happen
in your life.
The adrenaline you develop when you are with your brothers before
the match and the trip to an away stadium to see your team is a unique and an
unforgettable experience. According to a hooligan, the competition between
males is huge so showing how men you are during a match make you feel again and
have a break from the daily routine.
This is how a hooligan as they call them feels. The problem is that most
of hooligans are people are from abandon families who found a family in the
fan clubs as a result they express their passion wrongly and with hate to their
opponents.
What makes a hooligan differentiate from other people is the way he is dressed up. The most usual brands of a hools are lacoste, Stone Island, Burberry. The reason is to show as a high class person and rich people to cover from police.
JUVENTUS VS LIVERPOOL:
The next video shows documents from the tragedy of Heysel Stadium at Belgium. During this match Juventus against Liverpool for the European Cup Final in 1985, Liverpool’s fans move to the Juventus fans in a catastrophic result. The seats could not afford so much weight and they fell down were the Italian fans felt and 39 people died and other 600 were injured. This event is characterized as the Darkest hour in football history. All the English teams were banned for a year due to this event..
ULTRAS
Ultras
has the same meaning as Hooligans, people who are fall in live with their teams
and support it passionately reaching the levels of hate. The first species of
Ultras were fist seen in Brazil 1939. In 1950, when Fifa World Cup started
expanding all around the world the first team that welcome Ultras was Italy.
The first team that used the term Ultras was Sampdoria in 1969. Really fast the
term Ultras spread all around Europe until the end of eighty's.
One
of the most amazing atmospheres created by Ultras is in Thesalloniki, Greece
with a team called PAOK. Even Diego Maradona, the legend, admitted that PAOK’s
stadium atmosphere is more enthusiastic rather than boca Junior’s Ultras.
The
below photographs can describe the feeling of this kind of match. The opposite
is Olympiakos Pieraus and the rivalry of the two teams is obvious!
ULTRAS TIFO:
ULTRAS TIFO it is a fan online webpage were you can buy equipment
especially for fans. There are various products such as fireworks, t shirts,
hoodies, masks, air gasses, and other accessories.
TIFO TV:
TIFO TV is fan channel in YouTube were every week they uploaded online videos from fans of all around the world.
The video below, is one of my favorites. The reason is because
the rhythm of the chant is amazing and the lyrics are related with the history
of the team. At the end of the video, camera captured the moment when fireworks
light up because the team scored and the vibe from this people is unbelievable.
ULTRAS WORLD:
Ultras World is a fan page which sends professional photographers
all around the world aiming to learn and record facts and histories from teams
all around the world. Personally, one of my future goals is to volunteer and
take the chance to visit a city with true fans and watch the derby day.
Despite the fact that I love tattoos, I would never ink a tattoo
of my favorite team in my skin. Below, there are some hool tattoos from fans
of Liverpool, Apoel and Arsenal.
The craziness of some fans is described in this picture! He inked
the emblem of his favorite team in the head.

like Italia and Serbia. As usual in these kind of games fans watch a good game
and the atmosphere from the ‘hooligans’ is excellent, however if the match
become tense you might face the bad side of a hooligan.

My experience
Since I was a child I used to go to the matches and with my mobile
phone or with my camera I was trying to capture some photographs of the
beautiful atmosphere of color gasses and fireworks created by fans.
These are some of the most important stadiums I have visited so
far.
APOEL FC -STADIUM GSP
This is the biggest stadium in Cyprus and it is shared from the
two biggest teams in Cyprus Omonoia and APOEL Nicosia. The pictures are from a
recent match of these two big rivals in GSP recently. The fans with the Green
colour are Omonoia fans and are acquiring ¾ and they are the home team and the
rest with the orange are Apoel fans.
Stadium GSP it is the latest technology stadium existing in Cyprus at the moment with a capacity of 22.900 built in 1999. The new GSP built up because the old GSP in old Nicosia should be demolished and replaced by a parking and it capacity was around to 12.000 people.
In the day of the local derby the conflicts between fans are tense but in controlled and in normal levels. Only twice we had dramatic consequences of a fight between Omonoia and Apoel’s fan which belong to the past. Lots of Hooligans assume that this is because that during the match the adrenaline is so high and you can not even control yourself at this moment and the only way to relax is to show your hate to your opponent.
AJAX AFC - AMSTERDAM ARENA
In 2014, my team Apoel Nicosia qualified for Champions Leauge
group stage with Barcelona, PSG, and Ajax and I took the advantage of that and
visited the stadiums of such historical teams as the teams were included in
Apoel’s group. I managed to visit only the thrilling Amsterdam Arena the
stadium of Ajax.
The game finished 4-0 against Apoel but the atmosphere of the
Dutch was so exciting that made even us sing with them no matter that our team
was destroyed in the field. At this moment was when all of my fears gone
because before to visit Amsterdam, we knew the history of the famous Ajax
hooligans who took part in really violent actions and most of the times they
always carry with them guns or knifes. Fortunatelly, the fact that there team
won, make them express only good feelings.
Afc Ajax was founded in 1890 and their name is from the Greek hero Eanta, and it is the most successful club in Netherlands with 33 eredivise (Netherland league) and 18 cups. Furthermore, Ajax is famous for their academies and the young talents that are coming from Ajax every year.
Amsterdam Arena is the biggest stadium in Netherlands with a capacity of 50.000 people. It was built in 1993 and it was cost around to 140 millions!
FC UTRECHT - STADION GALGENWAARD
While I was going to Amsterdam I captured this picture in the
train. I was curious and I asked about this stadium and I discovered that this
is FC Utrecht stadium. FC Utrecht is a middle class team from Nederland eredivise
with only 3 cups and a second division championship with a stadium capacity of
25.000 people.
REAL MADRID CF - SANTIAGO BERNABEU
As everybody knows, the real queen of football is Real Madrid F.C
named by King Alfonso in 1920. It is the team which worth the most value of
money (2.5 billion euros) and their major rivals is Barcelona F.C with the
derby calls el clasico and the local rivals Atletico Madrid. I found the chance
to visit Real Madrid’s stadium Santiago Bernabeu when Apoel qualified to the 8
of Champions Leauge and lost 5-2 from the Queen. What stacked in my mind from this game was
Real fans after the end of the match who stand and applause for us after the
end of the game because we were chanting and creating a good atmosphere no
matter the fact that our team was behind at the score. No one expected that
from a Royale team with the Real Ultras to be considered really dangerous.
Real Madrid has 32 la liga titles so far, 18 cups and 10 champions
Leauge trophys and this is the reason why acquires the name Queen. Stadium
Santiago Bernabeu has a capacity of 81.000 builted in 1944 and is the second
largest in Spain behind the trilling Camp Nou. Can you even imagine the
atmosphere in the day of El Clasico? The dream of every fan!
PANATHINAIKOS FC- OAKA
In Greece except of Paok, Panathinaikos fans have one of the greatest background in the country hosted in Olympic Stadium of Athens with a capacity of 75.000 builted in 1980 and rebuilt in 2004 for the Olympic games. I had the honor to visit this stadium in 2010 to watch the biggest derby in Greece between Panathinaikos Vs Olympiakos, a game that I will keep always in mind for many years.
A
really tense game with stricted measures during the derby day by the police.
First of all, in some highly dangerous games such as the derby away fans are
not allowed to go and watch the match to avoid any incidents.
The original stadium of Panathinaikos before to move to Olympic
Stadium of Athens is located in Leoforo Alexandras and have the name of the
street which could not qualified according to FIFA’S criteria.
OAKA hosting AEK athens one of the most successful football clubs in Greece and also was the Main Stadium of Summer Olympics of 2004. Was build in 1980 and the capacity is around 75.000 seats.
The game was 0-1 untill the magician Cisse score two sensational
goals in 5 minutes and turn the match all around. The feeling cannot be
described in words, the fans of Panathinaikos almos burn the stadium. The
excitement and adrenaline was on their increase and 60.000 people flying around
from their seats.

SUNDERLAND FC - STADIUM OF LIGHT
This year I had the chance to visit city of Sunderland. A small
city and from the balcony of an appartemnt I captured this panoramic picture
with Wearmouth bridge in the left and behind the stadium of light, Sunderlands
stadium builted in 1997 with a capacity of 49.000.
WOLVERHAMPTON - MOLINEUX STADIUM
Around February, I visited some nephews I have in Wolverhampton
a small city full of small parks and
there is located a stadium that really surprised me and made me pay attention.
The Moleniux stadium hosting Wolverhampton F.C since 1899 and it is one of the
oldest stadiums in history of football with 32.000 seats. Unfortunately, the
match had already started and I did not manage to watch the match. However the
chants and the noise of the crowd was really passionate and tensive.
WOLVES
MANCHESTER CITY STADIUM - ETIHAD STADIUM
Etihad stadium was built in 2006 with a capacity of 60.000
people and cost 470 million. It is one of the latest technology stadiums and
spectators have spectacular view from any corner of the stadium. The feeling
cannot be described in words.
MANCHESTER UNITED FC - OLD TRAFORD
This
is was the last stop of my project. It is one of the most popular stadiums in
the World and a team with the most fans in an international level. The capacity
of the stadium is around 75.000 seats and it was open first in 19 February
1910.
In 22 December 1940 After the Second World War British Government sponsored Manchester UTD president to rebuild a new stadium that still exist the well known Old Traford.
ARSENAL FC- EMIRATES STADIUM
One of the best matches I have ever watched was the London
derby between Arsenal FC and Tottenham FC. When I used to work in Ayia Napa I
met a fan of Arsenal and when he visited me here in Manchester he invited me to
watch the derby so I went with him without any hesitation. The score finished
5-2 for Arsenal.
My Work
In that point I would like to express some ideas that I had
and I use one of them for my final. First of all I wanted to work in the
studio, so I found two models engaged with Ultras and I work with them. The pictures below are the best of them. Even
in the studio they can show you a different world, the Hooligan’s world.
When I set the studio I start working with the lights, so I
thought how those pictures would be in real riots. It wasn't even necessary to
give advises to the model. Wearing his casual clothes he found anything that he
could use in a real fight. In the studio we found the crowbar and the white box
which you can see in the photos.
“When you are in a fight, or in riots or under any kind of
attack the first thing you do is look for anything useful for a fight. Stones,
crowbars, bottles, sticks, anything you can use to protect yourself, your mates
standing next to you and your reputation”. That was the answer he gave me when
I ask how he would react in that situation.
Then I thought that my photos would be better without
showing the faces of the models. The shadow helped me to make that photo even
better, to give that photo a new dynamics. His casual clothes and the pose he
has remind me a cover photo of a movie about Hooliganism. Off course the
background in the studio was not the best for that kind of pictures so I use
the Photoshop to make it seem more realistic.
The love and the passion they have for their team and the
hatred that they have with their enemies, leads them to the limits. They are
determined to hurt anyone. Actually some hooligans are arranging meetings known
as “Death meetings”. In those cases they don’t use any kind of
weapons, just their own hands, they are equal number and they don’t hurt anyone
other than them. In other cases hooligans are much more dangerous.
His bad friends and his passion for his team was enough to lure
him in that life. At the 10th of May 2009 Apoel hooligans attacked
the sector of Omonoia fans (deadly enemys). They broke the chairs of the
sectors, they stole their banners and they beat down everyone in the sector. At
the following video you can see Omonoia fans (green t-shirts) running to save
their selves from Apoel fans (orange t-shirts).
At the next pictures I used another model. This one told me about his personal experiences he had in riots with the police or with other hooligans. Actually his is from Cyprus like me and he support the same team as me, Apoel. In Cyprus everyone knows that Apoel fans are the most rival fans with the most dangerous hooligans. Apoel fans call their selves animals and they might hurt anyone. I asked him why he choose to live a life full of violence. He told me that there is not any specific reason he did that.
After that my friend got arrested. I asked him how they
found him and he smile. He showed me his tattoos and he told me that someone
recognized him and he snitch him to the police. After that he took 3000 euros
penalty and 3 years band from any football events. Now he stopped this life and
he is only watch English Premier Team because is the most professional leagues
in the world in his opinion.
This time I used black background for my photo so the shadow
and the illumination changed. I like the color of the sun that covers the
model. I used two different lights, one on the right and one on the left of the
model to emphasize on his body without much shadows or light.
Again using the same crowbar from the studio I tried to put
him on a pose with his body bended to like his read to hit someone. I didn’t
change anything on that photo because I like how the lights emphasize on his
tattoos when he holds the crowbar with the right hand.
The younger hooligans follow the code “No face No name” so
every time they cover their faces with scarves, hoods or even their t-shirts.
In that picture using the combination, casual style hat with him naked and
covering his face, I tried to contrast the old school supporters style with the
younger ultras style.
Violence is one of the worst things in humanity. Unfortunately
the hooligans showdown and not only, to the fellow men the only thing that
seeks is fear as a result to they feel better.
exhibition
Today
I went to Alerton Building with my classmates to see the place of our
exhibition to set up the place and to paint the wooden walls where we will hang
the final part of our project.
I
estimate that every one of us has one square meter of wall to present his/her
final project. I will personally summarize my work by choosing three of my best
photos. I am going to use one A2 size photo and in the middle of my given space
two smaller ones. (10x15size) Now the only thing that’s left is to choose the
proper frames for my final images.
MY WORK- OLD SCHOOL SUPPORTERS PORTRAITS
At
the next part of my project I decided not to stay focused only to the studio,
but to get out in order to look for real football supporters. So I did, after
some research, I found a pub that Man Utd fans are frequented. I spoke with the
owner of the pub and I explained to him my requests and what was my purpose of
the photos that I will capture and he accepted me.
At
my first time that I’ve been there, UTD lost in Premiere League match and the
mood was quite aggressive to me. So I decided to visit them next week as I did,
I went there and took some photos of their Old School Supporters.
As
you can see the satisfaction to their faces and the happiness that their team
gave to them after a great victory I took them some crazy photos.
Victory and beers its all what a fan needs for his Sundays.
To come closer to those people I explained to them my purpose of
my project without saying anything about hooliganism. When I get more friendly
to them I asked them if they ever been in riots.
In general each hooligan has their own love stories about
hooligans and use to share them with new hooligans or friends. But according to
the old hooligans these stories belongs to the past. The old good Sundays
finished and the things have changed for the older ones.

MY WORK - NO FACE NO NAME
No
face no name is the title of my next piece of work. Hooligans are aware that
they can be easily spotted by CCTV Cameras so for that reason during their
fights and incidents usually they were masks in order not to be recognized and
get arrested. For example, according to a personal experience I was in a
football match were fights between hooligans started from the early stages of
the game. I was the only one with the camera so I started taking pictures and
after the end of the fight one of the hooligans approached me and insisted to
give him my camera because his was afraid I will hand them to police, when the police arrived.
In the part No face no name I gathered some of my friends and I
talked to them about my project I want to finish and how I expect it to be.
They accept to help me finish my project after I asked them to help me with
some photographs. I decided to represent with the help of my friends a hooligan
fight. I fully equipped them with the right equipment like glops, sharp items,
molotfs, gloves, and mask in order the video to seem real.
The
spot I had chosen for this capture looks like with an outdoor area of an old
stadium and that was the ideal spot to take the picture. Modern stadiums are
built with glass but the old ones used to be built with bricks.
By using photoshop application, I am going to add some extra
effects or even move my models into different backgrounds in order to present
realistically a real episode.
The
only thing that you can see on them is their eyes and those are sometimes covered
by sunglasses. I really enjoy the shapes of the figures; also the terror and
hate that comes from their eyes moments before the episode. As I have seen
these days during my research, hooligans are wearing this type of clothing. As
real hooligans told me, they go to each match dressed like that( casual) with
hoods on and scarfs and always ready to act!
Again,
getting help from photoshop and experimenting for hours I came up to this
beautiful result…

Sometimes,
the two sides arrange a meeting in narrow roads, hidden into the city. We will
see the reasons below.
Security
cameras, close systems, latticework, iron doors and police presence are the
main reasons for reduction of hooliganism episodes, at least in England…
In
England there are about 5-7 million cctv cameras. A huge amount; in fact the
analogy is one camera for 11 persons in England. Imagine this number and then
think about the level of security…
The
next photo is not taken by me but I found it online. As I said, one of the
reasons for hooligans’ disappearance is police. Imagine yourselves facing that
beast. If you look carefully, hooligans in this photo have no difference from
my models, reflecting on clothing and their figures.
Rage, Flower Thrower, was made by Banksy, a well-known artist. He
draw a man wearing scarf in order to cover his face, and wearing a hat the
wrong side. He is trying to throw a bouquet of flowers; man is black and white
but the flowers are colored. This photo also reminds the episodes in Greece in
1960 against the dictators. In this case, the flowers are a symbol of solving
conflicts with peace and not with war, stone throwing.
In this picture is me photo shooting the model which is a hooligan "throwing" a flower bucket.
The final image will be posted as the final message of the project against football hooliganism.
In
this picture I found a location which looks like with the surrounding of an old
stadium so I told to the model to make the move with his hand facing the
rivals. Sirmatomplegma it is amazing because it seems a challenge for hooligans
to enter an area that are not allowed especially in the tense of a match.
Budget and time Managemt
After
I decided to research in the topic of hooliganism I tried to manage my
timetable and put my actions in a logical sequence in order at the end my
project to be absolutely complete and cover all the objectives of my research.
More specifically I decided to start my research from the 5th of
April in order the research to be more effective to the reader. Moving forward,
I entered a studio twice in 8th of April and 14th of
April and from the 18th of April I went out to the roads started
exploring areas where I could gather information about my topic. My analytical
budget is:
- Frames from IKEA 30 pounds
- print my final images 40 pounds
- travel to Cyprus for the derby 190 pounds
- bouquet of Flowers 6 pounds
- 3.70 for trams tickets to IKEA
I totally spend 270 for my final project. I am very
satisfied about the money I spend. The most expensive was my trip back to
Cyprus to cover the match Apoel vs Omonoia.
Those are the frames for my exhibition which it’s going to
be at Friday 15th of June. I used the frame above on the picture
bellow 50x70 and I am going to put them on landscape. The other two pictures
will be on portrait 40x50. I will put them on my wall.
FINAL WORK - ETERNAL RIVALS
When I started this project a friend of mine advised me to
take some pictures at a match here in Manchester. Suddenly I could get any access
in a stadium here. So I went back to Cyprus and tried to get access in GSP for
the derby Apoel VS Omonoia. I asked them if I could take some photos of the
match and I explain to them the reason that I need those pictures. They gave
the pass so I went to the match. In the match I used Canon
EOS-1D Mark IV and lenses 70-200 and I took the following photos.
My main purpose wasn't to take photos of the players, but to
take photos at the fans at their best moments. The following pictures are my
final 8. I am going to choose 3 of them for my exhibition.

Every supporter of those two teams live for that derby. The 3 pictures are Omonoia fans which they
are on the north sector. In Cyprus football and politics go together. Omonoia
fans are communists and their fanatic supporters have the name “Gate
nine”. The council of the team is ruled by the members of AKEL
(communist political party in Cyprus).

The
pyro show, by flares and smoke bombs, created
a fantastic atmosphere. “Drink sing and fight”. The hooligans gave a clear
message.

The following photos are Apoel fans. They are using the
south sector of the stadium. Most of them support nationalism and they are very
the most rival ultras in the island.

The match started at afternoon. They always do their pyro shows when the team enters the stadium but this time was different. Both fans lighted their flares at the beginning of the second half when it was night. Amazing view!

As I mentioned above this is the final result, Inspired by
Banskey . I used the photo shop and I made the picture black and white but I
left the colors of the flowers
untouched.
In
this photograph I like the way the model is looking and his altitude in the
photograph. In this photograph the
hooligans with the altitude and the way he is dressed and his actions trying to
express the anti-violence message to the wider society.
